The British import hails from the original Land Rover models “driven and owned by everyone from 007 and Steve McQueen to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill,” according to a 2016 article by Brian Leon of the New York Daily News.
This Land Rover 90 (known as the Land Rover Defender from 1990 on) is a former military vehicle – fitting for a model that can trace its inspiration to the Army surplus Jeeps strewn across the United Kingdom after World War II.
In keeping with its predecessors, the SUV is spartan in existence. Power windows and a tachometer are considered luxuries. What the 90 lacks in comfort, it makes up for with capability and durability.
“Not long ago Land Rover claimed 75 per cent of the vehicles it had ever sold were still on the road.”, wrote Jasper Gerard in a 2010 piece for The Telegraph. “No wonder Landy drivers call mere cars ‘disposables’.”
The Land Rover 90 is just one iteration of a line of vehicles that “as British icons go, it’s up there with Paul McCartney,” according to a 2013 article from The Telegraph.
